- Application procedure and deadlines for outgoing students
The Institute of Chinese Studies welcomes ERASMUS applications from Master’s students.
Application deadline: 15 January
Required application documents: Letter of motivation (approx. 2 pages). Students interested in the ERASMUS programme are kindly asked to consult the departmental ERASMUS coordinator (Dr. Tobias Voß, tobias.voss@sinologie.uni-freiburg.de) during his office hours prior to their application.
Beginning of the mobility: winter term (August/September of the same year)

- Recognition of academic performance abroad
Academic performance abroad by students of the MA programme “Modern China Studies” can be credited in module 7 “Semester abroad”. Please note that the semester abroad is supposed to comprise at least 30 ECTS (or the respective equivalent). Up to 5 ECTS can be earned by writing an appropriate study report of adequate length, which means that at least 25 ECTS have to be earned at the receiving institution (The examination regulations can be found here.).
- Information for Incoming Students (ERASMUS+)
The Institute of Chinese Studies is pleased to welcome incoming Master’s students to the University of Freiburg.
The winter term starts in October and ends in February. The summer term begins in April and ends in July. The exact dates can be found here.

Winter term:
- Master Seminar on Sources, Methods and Theories in Chinese Studies (10 ECTS)
- Master Seminar on Chinese Politics and Economy OR on Chinese Culture and Society (10 ECTS)
- Chinese language source reading class accompanying the Master Seminar (3 ECTS)
- Language and Reading Exercise 1 (6 ECTS)
Summer term:
- Research and Teaching Design (2 ECTS)
- Master Seminar on Chinese Politics and Economy OR on Chinese Culture and Society (10 ECTS)
- Chinese language source reading class accompanying the Master Seminar (3 ECTS)
- Language and Reading Exercise 2 (6 ECTS)
The Chinese language source reading classes are attended both by native speakers and by non-native speakers. Students attending the Language and Reading Exercises are usually divided into two groups: One for Chinese native speakers and one for non-natives.
