About the Institute

Research and teaching at the Institute of Chinese Studies at the University of Freiburg focus on modern and contemporary China through an interdisciplinary approach that combines history and the social sciences. The Institute also offers comprehensive training in the Chinese language. Research at the Institute deals with a wide range of aspects concerning modern China, including Chinese politics, economy, society, culture and history. The Institute also cooperates with other China experts at the University in the fields of history, law, sociology, medicine and psychology. Students take courses that train them for occupations with a focus on China, learn how to play an active part in international research on the country, and how to inform the public about current developments.
